A death by natural causes is one that is primarily attributed to an illness or an internal malfunction of the body not directly influenced by external forces. It is related to diseases and the process of aging. Examples of death by natural causes are heart attacks, cancers, pneumonias, strokes, etc.
A death by unnatural causes is due to external causes. It includes death due to intentional injury, such as homicide or suicide and death caused by unintentional injury in an accidental manner, such as motor vehicle accidents. Hence it would include events such as:
- being attacked by insects, reptiles or wildlife
- adverse outcome of surgery (note that this is not failure of surgery)
